ROAD CYCLING

Cycling up the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road to the Baw Baw village is not for the faint hearted. Some professional riders have considered the ascent of Mt Baw Baw as the second hardest climb in the world of cycling and is sure to test your endurance; a gradient of 20.6% is recoded at Winch Corner. Reaching the top is a gratifying feat, as you ride into the village you are rewarded with stunning views over West Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula. Upon completing your ride, treat yourself to a refreshing drink at Mt Baw Baw’s Village Restaurant (open Friday – Sunday October – May), you deserve it!

7 PEAKS ALPINE ASCENT CHALLENGE

Mt Baw Baw is one of the peaks in the 7 Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge. Cyclists are challenged to ride seven of Victoria alpine peaks at their own pace during the summer months for the opportunity to win a range of prizes including a trip to the Tour De France. THE ANNUAL BAW BAW CLASSIC

This road race is held in April every year and covers a grueling 103km of bitumen from Warragul to the Baw Baw Village. The ride winds its way through the West Gippsland hinterland, passing through the towns of Neerim South, Noojee and Tanjil Bren before making a rapid ascent towards the summit of Mt Baw Baw. This race is considered the hardest sealed road climb in Australia and the 2nd steepest categorised climb in the world. There is not much flat road between the start and the finish, you are either going up or down! This one day race has been won by some of the country’s best cyclist including Simon Gerrans in 2003.
