    Snow Making & Grooming

    HAIL TO OUR SNOWMAKERS!

Mt Baw Baw undertakes snowmaking at all times of the winter season when conditions permit.

Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort uses a mobile fleet of Lenko snowguns and equipment to ensure maximum snow production.

Our hard working snowmakers toil through the nights and can produce over 70 000 cubic metres of machine made snow during an average season!

Mt Baw Baw undertakes snowmaking at all times of the winter season when conditions permit. Keep in mind that even if it is cold, we cannot always use the snow machines as they require perfect weather conditions for us to make snow. Snowmaking is predominantly a night operation of which up to 14 hours can be undertaken when a good snowmaking shot is underway. Clear cold nights with no wind are to optimum times for snowmaking. This is generally when lower temperatures and lower humidity are experienced.

    WHAT IS GROOMING YOU ASK?

While you are getting your well-earned sleep, Mt Baw Baw’s grooming team is hard at work on the slopes. With every turn we make on our skis or board, snow is pushed downhill and to the sides, creating piles of snow or ‘moguls’ on the ski runs. Every night, our grooming machines travel up and down the slopes, moving, flattening and packing the snow into a uniform finish to produce the best skiing possible.

The snow grooming team also performs other tasks around the mountain, including preparing lift stations and access areas as well as Ski & Snowboard School beginner teaching areas, building race courses, terrain parks, transporting goods and clearing snow for access to buildings. Another vital function is snow farming, which involves pushing snow into piles that are stored and used as required in high wear areas, access trails and to repair slopes.

It’s all about ensuring when you get up the slopes they are an easy, enjoyable ride!

Snowmaking is predominantly a night operation of which up to 14 hours can be undertaken when a good snowmaking shot is underway. Our snowmakers carry dedicated mobile phones for snowmaking. When the weather stations record the required temperature the phones are rung by the computer and the crew is up and running for the shift. This could happen at any time, however; it can generally be forecast in-line with weather information available from the Bureau of Meteorology via their website.
