You might be surprised to find that Victoria is home to 7 different ski and snow resorts! Many of these resorts are located within three hours drive of Melbourne so are suitable for a day trip.
Here’s our list of the closest (distance by road) snow and ski resorts to Melbourne – in order from the closest to the furthest away.

1. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort
119km from the CBD (Approx. 2 hours, 15 minutes drive)
While it doesn’t offer downhill skiing – Lake Mountain is the closest snow area to Melbourne’s CBD and offers tobogganing, cross country and snow play.
2. Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort
155km from the CBD (Approx. 2 hours, 45 minutes drive)
Mt Baw Baw is Melbourne’s closest downhill ski and snowboard resort and offers lessons, skiing, tobogganing, snow play and other experiences such as alpine dingo cuddles. Mt Baw Baw also offers overnight on-snow accommodation, unlike resorts such as Lake Mountain which are day-trip only.

3. Mt Buller Alpine Resort & Mt Stirling
235km from the CBD (Approx. 3 hours, 25 minutes)
Much like Mt Baw Baw, Mt Buller offers downhill skiing, boarding, tobogganing and accommodation but is located on the northern side of Victoria’s Alpine Region.
4. Mt Hotham Alpine Resort & Dinner Plain
378km from the CBD (Approx 4 hours, 45 minutes)
Mt Hotham is one of the highest altitude ski resorts with downhill skiing, boarding and accommodation. The nearby Dinner Plain, much like Mount Baw Baw, offers family friendly activities and accommodation.
5. Falls Creek Alpine Resort
387km from the CBD (Approx. 4 hours, 45 minutes)
Falls Creek is the furthest ski resort from Victoria’s capital city at 387km distance and can be access by travelling to the north from Melbourne. It offers downhill skiing, boarding, tobogganing and accommodation.

Can I access the Mt Baw Baw by bus?
Yes! Shuttle services are available through private companies that offer group transfers from the Melbourne CBD.
Are there easy routes to Mt Baw Baw for those who get car sick?
Yes! The easiest drive to Mt Baw Baw is the South Face Road – via the freeway and then through Erica. While it does take a little bit longer than the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road, South Face is much less windy. It should be noted that the final 30km of this route is unsealed (gravel).
